Chapter 11

“We’re going to miss you!” Elise wrapped her arms around Bethany and sighed deeply.

“I can’t believe you’re actually going,” Sue Ellen said, shaking her head.

“It’s not like I don’t know Tyler. Yes, he left out the fact that he has four children, but everything else has been truthful.” Bethany stretched out her arms to Sue.

“I truly hope so.” Sue started to cry, hugging her friend for the last time.

“Look after my father for me?”

“We will… Or I will, since Elise is accepting the marriage proposal from her man in Iowa.”

“Promise you’ll write,” Bethany said to both of them. “I’ll be back if it doesn’t work out.”

They looked at her confused.

“You have such little faith in this? Even after all the good things you’ve told us about Tyler?” Elise tilted her head to the side in question.

She hadn’t told her friends she planned on returning as soon as she gained enough money to help her father. The more she’d thought about the plan, the more it had made sense, the more it had solidified as the only option she had. While Elise and Sue might look after her father while she was gone, she couldn’t leave him alone here forever. This was the only way to revive his health.

“I’m just not getting my hopes up, that’s all.” Bethany hugged her friends one more time. They huddled together and said a loving prayer, then Bethany was on her way. The train station was noisier and busier than she expected, but she had soon stored her small amount of luggage and gotten on board.

She looked out the window, waiting for the train to depart, and excitement rushed through her veins. She didn’t know what to expect, but her heart was beating hard in her chest as she realized this was it. This was her escape. Her escape from the slavery of life in the factory and from the prison of her circumstances.

She had tolerated it well enough, but now she could see the light at the end of the tunnel. And with that, she realized how enclosing those factory walls had been. The small confines of their apartment had cramped her mind and her creativity. The fresh air would invigorate her senses, and she would see a different part of the world, doing it all while helping her father.

Tyler had sent her extra money, beyond the train ticket, saying it was to cover any expenses associated with her journey. She had left most of it behind, with her father. She’d told him she was going on a special job Mr. Hall had assigned her and promised she would only be gone a few months. He’d been happy for her, of course. But she had seen the fear on his face, before he had masked it. The fear of what would become of him now that she was gone if he couldn’t recover from his illness.

She thought of the weak smile on his pallid face and pushed any guilt for deceiving Tyler out of his money aside.
